So we’ve been plugging away at this kitchen for a few weeks now and we’re trying hard not to burn ourselves out. When it’s only two people doing the work and one is not as skilled as the other, you don’t move as fast as you’d like but it’s been easier to breathe in there, especially without all the drywall dust.
Let’s take a look back at what the kitchen looked like before we moved in.
Lots of red and white. Well here’s what she looks like now at the halfway point of the renovations….
I didn’t want a U shaped layout because with a new stove and fridge it would look and feel cramped. We relocated the fridge so it was no longer on the right hand side. Since we got rid of one wall and shortened the other, the fridge looked way too big and awkward where it was. Now food can go from the fridge, to being washed in the sink, to being chopped and then to the pan!
We also have less cabinet space which to some might be the opposite direction you’d want to go in. We will actually be downsizing all the extra pots, pans, bowls, and dishware we have to keep from excess. There is only two of us and you don’t need a special kind of bowl to mix. It’s all about quality and not quantity. This goes for appliances too. Some of the extra things will be stashed in the Truck camper so we can save money from being another set to take with us on the road.
We also have a lot of spare cabinets which we’ll be selling. The small space between the corner cabinets and the above the sink cabinet will soon be home to a custom spice rack. We will be adding some open shelving for cook books and other odds and ends. But the best part of the renovation is all the natural light that fills in the kitchen. This picture was taken around 4 pm which before would have warranted a light to be turned on but now I can still work in there for longer on sunny days.
There’s still a lot more to do and a lot of more detailed posts will go up about what we worked on but for now, let’s all bask in the glory of what some hustle and elbow grease can get you!
